ABOUT WITS

WITS introduction

Established in March 2012, The World Indigenous Tourism Alliance (WINTA) was founded by Indigenous tourism organizations from six countries including the Indigenous Tourism Association of British Columbia, Canada, Western Australian Indigenous Tourism Operators Council, Indigenous Tourism Alliance, NZ Maori Tourism, Sami Tourism, and the Trans Himalayan Environment and Livelihood Program(T-Help). As the idea was suggested by leaders of the Larrakia people, the local aboriginal people in Australia, after the establishment of the organization, they announced the "Larrakia Declaration."

WINTA is a global network organization dominated by Indigenous Peoples. It aims to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples through tourism, and to establish cooperative relationships with Indigenous communities, tourism operators, governments and non-governmental organizations around the world. Since 2018, the World Indigenous Tourism Summit (WITS) was held every two years to conduct researches on Indigenous tourism policies, experience-sharing, and to provide strategies and consultation.

WITS has a sound network, which includes more than 300 members from the government, non-governmental and tourism industry. Taiwan is also a member of the WITS network. We hope to promote the flourishing development of Indigenous tourism through international dialogues and collaborations in the future.

The 3rd WITS, with the hope of showcasing the colors of Taiwan's Indigenous Peoples, has designed a unique visual identity. "TULU" represents the number "3" in over 80% of Taiwan's indigenous languages and many Austronesian languages, indicating that WITS has reached its third year. Furthermore, to highlight Taiwan's rich Indigenous cultures, the visual representation incorporates the common color palette and diverse patterns of Taiwan's Indigenous Peoples, symbolizing the profound influence of Indigenous cultures.

ABOUT TAIWAN

Located between the Pacific Ocean and the Eurasian continent, Taiwan is a long and narrow island with mountains. The complex and various terrains and the passage of the Tropic of Cancer nurtured a rich and diverse natural ecology. The history has Taiwan embracing people from all over the world. Different ethnic groups, cultures and beliefs have shaped Taiwan’s prosperous and unique humanistic features.

Among the images composing today’s Taiwan, the Indigenous Peoples could be described as the most representative. Taiwan's Indigenous Peoples are regarded as the origin of the Austronesian people. The island is their homeland. They have unique traditional norms, spiritual beliefs, social systems, cultures and arts -- all born from the land. The Indigenous Peoples show their respect for the land and the wisdom of coexistence in balance with the environment. These spirits condense into the nutrients of Taiwanese culture shining in the world.
